With the 3rd pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select….Trey Lance, QB North Dakota State! The 49ers finally have their man. After all the hype about Mac Jones going to San Francisco, the smoke screen has finally cleared. Enter Trey Lance.
After all the experts and analysts predictions, I think it was Lance all along in the eyes of John Lynch & Kyle Shanahan. The 49ers made the trade up after the first pro day for Trey Lance. They then made the second pro day to see him again. This is a telling tale regarding how they felt about him. They did the same with OSU QB Justin Fields, but the writing was on the wall for Trey Lance from the get-go.
With Lance you have a big bodied, strong, athletic, mobile QB who has a rocket for an arm. He has all the necessary tools to execute Kyle’s system. The one downfall on his resume is lack of games played. Now with Jimmy still on the roster, will this allow Trey to sit back and learn? Perhaps Trey eventually beat him out to start day one? Many factors will go into the decision and the off-season will be interesting to see how it plays out.
Overall, I think this was a home-run for the Shanahan and Lynch regime. They get the QB Kyle wanted and now there are no excuses. With the defense being stout and the likes of Lance, Mostert, Deebo, Aiyuk & Kittle manning the offense, this team will be scary for years to come. Welcome to one of the most storied franchises in the history of the league — the San Francisco 49ers. Trey Lance season is upon us.
