Richard Sherman to I.R. Witherspoon in Concussion Protocol

Today, the 49ers announced that they have placed starting CB Richard Sherman on I.R. with a calf strain.

Reportedly, he suffered the injury near the end of the 4th quarter in Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.

The team also announced that CB Ahkello Witherspoon is in the concussion protocol. Witherspoon only played 4 snaps on Sunday.

They are already very thin at the CB position as it is, losing Richard Sherman is no easy task to overcome. Luckily for the team, their next stretch of games should bode well for the team, as they have to take on Sam Darnold, Daniel Jones, and Carson Wentz; 3 QBs who all lost their week one matchups.

The team should not take it lightly that they lost Sherman nonetheless, as this leaves Emmanuel Moseley and hopefully Witherspoon (assuming he clears the concussion protocol) as the incumbent starters until Sherman returns. In a corresponding roster move, the team promoted CB Dontae Johnson to the 53-man roster, and signed CB Brian Allen to the practice squad.

Although the injury to Sherman sucks, it is still a slight relief that the 49ers’ upcoming level of competition is light, albeit they should not look over any teams with how they have started this year (Disappointing loss to the Cardinals).
