26 Jan Niners’ Angelic D & S/T Kept Them From Needing Their Holy Trinity
GAME SUMMARY STARTED OUT KIND OF BUMMER-Y
The Green Pay Packers came out hot, despite an adjusted temperature of near zero. Dontae Johnson & K’Waun Williams looked like they would make Davante Adams into a complete hero. Niners’ defense bent & then Quadzilla & Quadfather rumbled to pay dirt, like a heating vent (7-0 GB).
The 49ers’ first drive started out quite tasty, with a 30-yard kick return by JaMycal Hasty. On 3rd & long Jimbo dropped back, and much to my dismay, he took his 1st sack!
On the Packers’ second drive, a fumble forced by Fred & recovered Dre, kept the Niners’ hopes alive!
On the Niners’ second drive, they got lucky that the call was incomplete & not a fumble, as the ball ended up in a Packers’ defender’s arms, near Aiyuk’s feet. 3rd & long was kind of wack, as Tom Compton allowed Rashan Gary to get the Packers’ second sack.
On the Packers’ third drive, they failed get into the mix. Rodgers threw incomplete when Warner had his coverage nailed. on 3rd & 6.
The Niners’ third drive ended up in a stop, thanks in large part to a huge Kittle drop.
The Packers’ fourth drive pretty much went kabam, when ended on a sack, by Samson Ebukam.
The Niners’ fourth drive failed to get on track, when Tom Compton allowed Rashan Gary to get the Packers’ third sack (second for Gary vs Compton).
On the Packers’ fifth drive, Nick Bosa got a 1-yard sack luckily, otherwise Aaron would’ve been running free. On 4th & 2, Rodgers tried get the Niners to jump, but their defense stayed disciplined, which got them over the hump.
On the Niners’ fifth drive, Jimbo had a throw that was deflected, otherwise it probably would’ve been perfected. Then, he hit Kittle for his first catch, which turned out to be a leaping one-armed sideline snatch! The drive’s movement to the red zone was bold, until big Trent Williams got hit with a hold. 19 yards ’til pay dirt would’ve done the trick, if only Jimbo hadn’t decided to throw a pick!
On the Packers’ sixth drive, Rodgers hit Aaron Jones down the right side for 75 yards & only Tartt could make him break stride. I thought the Niners were sure to be 14 points back, when Bosa forced with an amazing strip sack! The Packers came up with the ball & made the FG that was expected by all. 39-yard attempts are just about a lock, but no one expected the Jimmie Ward block! (7-0 GB at the half)
The Niners’ sixth drive was looking on track, as Deebo ripped off a 45-yard run back. The drive was taking Packers’ defense to task, until Eli Mitchell was called for a facemask. That was all for the offensive the deflation, as Aiyuk was called for illegal formation. If all of that was bad enough, Kris Barnes hit Deebo so hard that he had to prove he was tough. Despite it being near zero degrees cold, Robbie as usual, was good as Gould. (7-3 GB)
On the Packers’ sixth drive, they ended up being stopped, after a pass to Josiah DeGuara ended up being dropped.
The Niners’ sixth drive really needed a spark. Instead, it ended on sack, by Kenny Clark. If that wasn’t enough pain, Trent Williams hobbled off, with an apparent ankle sprain. A pick-six was narrowly eluded, when Jimbo targeted Woerner, but the catch was precluded.
The Packers’ seventh drive went red zone deep, before a false start & an Arik Armstead sack made sure that the Packers barely made a peep. (10-3 GB with 11:27 to go, in the 4th quarter)
The Niners’ seventh drive looked like lots of fun, right up until Eli Mitchell was stuffed on 4th & 1, at the Packers 21. It was said by me, that now it’s up to the Niners’ D.
Just as I was starting to pout, the Packers’ eighth drive went 3 & out! Dontae went head to head with DJ, so for one play on the sideline he had to stay. Josh Norman came in & was immediately tested. Luckily for the Niners, he wasn’t bested. The third play was a sack by AA! The Packers lined up & attempted a punt, but Jordan Willis blocked it like a popped up bunt! But wait that’s not all, there’s more, Hufanga scooped it up & ran in for the score! I can say with good reason, that this was the biggest play off the Niners’ 2021 season. (10-10 with 4:41 to go in the 4th)
On the Packers’ ninth drive, the Niners’ defense didn’t yield. On top of that on first down, the Packers were called for an illegal man downfield. Instead of attacking the Niners’ defense with a roar, Adams made a catch, but it only went for 4. K’Waun looked real quick, as he broke up a pass, that could’ve been a pick. Then, Rodgers heaved it deep. but Huf & Dontae made sure Adams ended up in a heep, without making a peep. The Packers got the punt off this time when they called that play, but not without first taking a delay!
The Niners’ eighth drive, from their 29, needed to be sublime. A field goal was required, without leaving Rodgers any time. On a slant, with a nice burst, Kittle made a catch that went for a first. Helping keep the drive alive, Eli Mitchell ran it for 5. Unsure if they would thaw by morning, the clock stuck the 2-minute warning. The drive needed a drug infusion & not just a placebo, the only thing to do was throw it 14 yards, to Deebo! A Deebo run for 3, I might normally mock, but this helped the Niners to continue draining the clock. Deebo getting stuffed would be reason for me to shout, but it made the Packers burn their final timeout! The toss was high & luckily Deebo didn’t let go by. As things stood, 56 yards would be needed, to make a FG good. (1:03 to go). It was a crucial 3rd & 7, and the Niners needed their hero to take them to heaven. Deebo got the call & 9 yards he ran with the ball! They ran 2 times more, to take the clock to :04. Robbie Gould lined up for a 45-yard FG try, to end the game & tell the Packers’ season goodbye. The snap, hold & kick were all good! The game had ended as Niner fans hoped it would! (13-10 SF)
The biggest surprise had to be the teams that for once, in a long time, were actually special with every point supplied.
Niners’ defense had to be elite, or they surely would’ve been beat. Opposing QBs have been made lames, with 5 sacks in each of the Niners’ last 3 games. Highlight on Dontae, who most feared would be chopped meat.
Deebo as we usually see, once again, was the hands down MVP.
Kittle had the huge drop that probably cost the Niners a TD, but his bounce back was plain for all to see.
Eli, as usual, was up to the task, on just about every play except the 4th & 1 stuff + his red zone facemask.
Offensive line, other than Compton, wasn’t too bad. Even Tom improved late, so some time in the pocket could be had.
Aiyuk got lucky to not have fumble, then Kyle made him humble. Call it a rough patch, but he didn’t have a single catch.
Jimmy G. did just enough to help secure the victory. Penalties, Compton & drops, made him look pretty far from tops. He still worries me, every time I see him dance, but at least we get one more chance to advance.
If the Rams are worrying you, be sure to look by Friday, or sooner, for my Rams preview.
