49ers Sign WR Jaron Brown

The 49ers continue to bolster the back end of their wide receiver group. They had previously signed veterans Tavon Austin & JJ Nelson. Today, ESPN’s Adam Schefter announced they also have signed former-Seahawks receiver Jaron Brown.

After second-year receiver Jalen Hurd reportedly tore his ACL shortly after training camp began, the 49ers continue to look for veteran receivers who can still be productive to add to the group.

Brown began his career in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals in 2013. He played in the desert until 2017, which also was his best season — totaling 477 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns. Perhaps the most intriguing stat line is 15.4 yards per catch. Brown certainly has some burners on him.

He signed with Seattle in 2018 and although he hauled in 5 touchdowns, he only totaled 166 receiving yards. He improved on that total slightly in 2019 with 220 receiving yards.

One thing is clear — the 49ers, with under four weeks left until week 1, still appear to be looking for a veteran deep threat to stretch the field. Are these signings just camp bodies and insurance for injuries/COVID, or are they a sign that they are still looking for the final piece of this puzzle?
