49ers Sign Star LB Fred Warner to 5-Year Extension

Early Wednesday morning the San Francisco 49ers announced they had agreed to a 5-year, $95M ($40.5M guaranteed) contract extension with star linebacker Fred Warner, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. Warner’s $19M per year average now makes him the highest-paid linebacker in the NFL, surpassing Seattle’s Bobby Wagner ($18M).

Most fans (including myself) had locking up Warner to a long-term deal as the #1 priority for the 49ers this off-season, as the BYU-product was entering his final year of his rookie deal. The team got his extension done just in time to kickoff the new year, as all players are due to report to camp in Santa Clara in a little under a week from today.

Warner has developed into the best linebacker in the NFL since entering the league as a 3rd-round pick in 2018. He earned his first Pro Bowl & All Pro selections last year, after having a career-high 125 tackles per Pro Football Reference.

The news of his extension garnered some excitement and support from his (current and former) teammates.
